Guizot s Works - Representative Government - 1861 book In nineteenth-century Europe, democracy was not embraced with the same enthusiasm it now enjoys. Conservative critics questioned central democratic normative principles, while liberals tried to correct the limitations of actual democratic practice. While accepting the inevitability of democracy, nineteenth-century liberals often resisted the idea that universal suffrage guaranteed the wisdom of the people s choices. Nothing better illustrates this difficult apprenticeship of democracy than the writings of Franois Guizot, whose political thought focuses on the relationship between liberalism and democracy. François Pierre Guillaume Guizot (4 October 1787 -12 September 1874) was a French historian, orator and statesman. Guizot was a dominant figure in French politics prior to the Revolution of 1848. This copy of Guizot s works was published in 1861 and translated by Andrew R. The clock features its original signed Ingraham 8 day strike movement that keeps good time and gongs the hour and a single bell on the half hour. It will look spectacular in your home or office. The clock appears original except for a replacement timber back. Clock comes with a pendulum and key. Clock movement has been lubricated with clock oil and then run to ensure it works correctly.
